An Introduction from the Principal

As Principal, I have great pleasure in welcoming you to Cathedral Academy, Wakefield’s only Church of England Secondary school. Our vision is to offer the best possible experience for all of the children and young people in our care, and an experience that prepares them for life.

Students and parents are joining the academy at an exciting time. Cathedral Academy is part of the Trinity Multi-Academy Trust (MAT), a family of schools delivering consistently outstanding education for children and young people across the region. The flagship school within the MAT is Trinity Academy Halifax, an Ofsted outstanding provider which is one of the best non-selective schools in the country for GCSE and A-level results. I was part of Trinity for more than 15 years, and saw the school change from a satisfactory school with stagnant results, to a flagship school that challenges students of all abilities and sees them achieving results far beyond what they are predicted upon entry.

As Principal, I am working with staff and students to translate those successes here. This is about building upon what works, and providing our students with new and exciting opportunities in and outside of the classroom.

Of course, as Principal, I am working with staff to have a strong focus upon academic results. These results are what open doors for our young people, build a reputation with their future employers and make a difference within our community. As a father of three young children, my decisions are influenced by both an educational and personal perspective. My first question always is ‘is this right for our young people and is this something that as a parent I would want to see and support?’

I passionately believe that education is both academic and personal. We are extremely privileged to have our CAPA Juniors programme. This enables those young people with a real desire to pursue a career in the Arts to gain a solid grounding in this field whilst still receiving a formal education.

Of course, not all students wish to pursue such a path, but the blend of students this attracts makes for a wonderful, very special atmosphere – all students are given the chance to grow their confidence through the Arts. Benefiting from the fantastic Arts facilities is something we encourage all students to do, building life-long resilience and skills such as confidence and public speaking.

If you are a parent looking for a school that values each child as an individual, and provides an experience that enables them to achieve more personally and academically, then we look forward to welcoming you to Cathedral. Please feel free to contact us to ask any questions or arrange to look around, so you can see our community in action.
